SK Telecom has soft-launched its T Smart Learning mobile education offering, unveiling more details - including pricing and initially supported devices - of the platform.

The company revealed it is taking registrations for the platform, which has been designed to work on tablet PCs, and will at first be made available on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

SK Telecom also is in talks with Apple to introduce the service on the iPad, company executives told the Korea Herald.

The service will reach stores from next month, and SK Telecom aims to extend it overseas from next year. The company is targeting 50,000 users within six months of launch.

As well as the initial English and mathematics courses, SK Telecom revealed it will add Science and Korean language support by 1H12. The subscription cost will be 26,000 won ($24.50) per subject, with discounts given for multiple subjects.

If students fall behind in their coursework, they will be “motivated” through measures such as the sending of text messages, the operator said.

SK Telecom has partnered with 12 education companies and groups, including the Korean Federation of Teachers' Association, for T Smart Learning.

The operator first announced the platform last month, revealing that it will provide downloadable educational content such as coursework, and the ability for parents to track students' educational progress.

It also foreshadowed ambitions to extend the service to international markets, including Singapore, Thailand and India.
