Skyhook: 'Bulk apps' drive App Store growth

Mass-produced 'bulk apps' -- template-based mobile applications sold at the same price point with the same look and feel but different content -- are responsible for the spike in applications added to Apple's App Store in the first half of 2009, according to a new study published by Skyhook Wireless.

Skyhook reports that in said period, the App Store added thousands of bulk apps in the 99-cent price point which dominate overall sales.

'There is not yet a well-understood path to monetization for mobile apps," said Skyhook director Kate Imback. "As developers experiment with various price points, mobile advertising and virtual goods, it will be interesting to see if bulk apps gain traction."
