South Korean operators apply for 5G auction

Each of South Korea's three mobile operators – SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus – have applied to take part in the nation's first 5G auction due to commence next week.

The auction of spectrum in the 3.5-GHz and 28-GHz bands is due to commence on schedule on June 15.

Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT still has to review the documents submitted by the operators to determine whether they are fit to participate in the auction, but this is largely a formality with the operators all expected to pass the process.

As announced last month, the government plans to allocate the spectrum available in the auction evenly among the participants, rather than allocating the largest portion to the highest bidder.

The government also plans to limit bid amounts to prevent the auction from being too competitive and overly burdensome to the winners.

The operators are said to be more interested in the 3.5-GHz bandwidth due to be auctioned off due to its larger reach compared to the narrower 28-GHz spectrum.
