The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has completed standards necessary for mobile contactless payments supported by near field communications (NFC).

ETSI last week approved the dedicated software interface, also called host controller interface or HCI, according to the GSM Association (GSMA).

HCI is a software protocol that controls communication between the handset's NFC chip and the SIM card. ETSI last year adopted the single wire protocol as the hardware standard.

HCI allows users access to all the secure applications on their handset, no matter where they are stored, through one common interface.

These standards are necessary for handset makers to begin production of NFC-enabled phones in large volumes, according to GSMA.

At least thirteen operators have announced trials on contactless mobile payment services using NFC, GSMA said.
