Singapore's StarHub has completed a trial of live 4G event multicasting using equipment provided by Nokia.

The operator implemented Nokia's Liquid Applications technology for a trial during the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore last week, the companies said.

The Liquid Applications technology involves moving popular mobile content directly to the base station, improving browsing performance while reducing traffic loads for network operators.

During the trial, spectators were able to switch between four perspectives of the action by using their mobile devices.

StarHub CTO Mock Pak Lum said the trial could pave the way for the ability to deliver HD real-time perspectives of live events to any spectators.

“We are excited over the potential in moving digital content to the farthest edge of our mobile network – the base stations. This localized mobile content delivery significantly reduces lags and boosts surfing quality, offering our subscribers the best mobile broadband experience,” he said.

StarHub is currently carrying out further trials involving the full Liquid Applications suite.
