Taiwan's Asia Pacific Telecom is set to become the nation's fifth operator to launch 4G services, introducing a new unlimited data plan.

The operator yesterday started signing on 4G subscribers, Focus Taiwansaid. APT is offering services starting at TW$898 ($28.70) per month for uncapped data usage.

APT plans to officially launch its 4G network on December 24, joining rivals Chunghwa Telecom., Taiwan Mobile, Far Eastone and Taiwan Star Cellular in offering the services.

The operator already operates a CDMA-based 3G network and has around 1.8 million subscribers to the services.

APT acquired 4G spectrum during Taiwan's $4 billion 4G auction in 2013. The operator has decided to merge with fellow spectrum winner Ambit Microsystems, an affiliate of Taiwanese manufacturing giant Hon Hai, to conduct a joint 4G rollout.

Post-merger, Ambit will be combined into APT, while Hon Hai will hold a 23% stake in the new entity.
