Taiwan’s National Ilan University (NIU) is undertaking a three-year Uptime maintenance service project to replace and maintain its firewalls with a brand new security solution based on Check Point Next-generation Firewall (NGFW).

ICT solutions and services provider Dimension Data has been appointed to implement an NGFW to cope with the institution’s growth and changing demands.

Founded in 1926, NIU was one of the first institutions of higher education in Taiwan. Its Information & Computing Centre serves as a regional network management center for the Taiwan Academic Network (TANet) and Taiwan Advanced Research & Education Network (TWAREN).

NIU is also responsible for providing quality and high bandwidth network connection for research and academic institutes in Yilan County.

The university was struggling to keep pace with the increasing number of security threats. Its firewall was also creating performance problems, making it challenging to deliver highly secure and seamless network performance that was expected by the school faculties and students.

“The needs and expectations of those involved in the education sector have vastly increased in recent years," Dimension Data Taiwan general manager Frank Liao said.

Schools and students want a seamlessly ‘connected’ experience, both internally and externally, in order to access information and share knowledge, At the same time, IT teams are expected to cope with the dangers of constantly evolving cybercrimes along with the need to protect their systems and intellectual property.”
