An executive of India telco Tata Communications is now heading an industry group pushing for the adoption of wireless broadband technologies such as Wimax.

Tata announced Prateek Pashine, the company's VP for planning and retail business, has been named chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA).

Established five years ago, the WBA's goal is to drive adoption of wireless broadband technologies such as Wimax by developing common standards for network interoperability.

Tata recently announced it is investing $500 million in building India's first and largest commercial Wimax network. The company already runs the largest network of WiFi hotspots in the country.

The company recently launched Wimax services for retail customers and has been offering the service for domestic customers since December last year.
