India's Tata Communications has signaled it hopes to build a subsea cable in the Gulf by signing five Middle Eastern operators as partners.

Tata announced Tuesday that the six carriers would jointly build a subsea cable system linking India with the Gulf region.

Tata, one of the world’s biggest subsea capacity owners, said it had signed up Bahrain Internet Exchange, Nawras of Oman, Qatar Telecom Saudi Arabia's Mobily and the UAE's Etisalat.

However, it did not disclose the financial terms of the deal or the capacity or the timetable of the planned cable.

“This partnership underscores our aspirations to be a key player in the emerging markets space,” Tata president and COO Vinod Kumar said.
