Motorola said it has successfully completed the first mobile Wimax trial in Thailand after teaming up with local firm United Information Highway Company Limited (UIH).

UIH conducted trials in Bangkok and Phuket to assess Wimax traffic channeling capabilities in these areas.

The company secured its Wimax trial license from Thailand's National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) last year.

Bangkok and Phuket were selected as trial sites because of the areas' high demand for broadband services.

UIH is looking to deploy Wimax to provide low-cost broadband services to corporate users and travelers, according to Motorola.

Internet penetration rate in Thailand currently stands at around 15 percent, according to Vichai Bencharongkul, UIH executive committee chairman.

"We believe there is huge potential to market affordable broadband services to consumers and corporate users," he said.
