The IP transit market grew slightly in Q4 but most of the volatility in the ranking was due to the trading of customers and peers. NTT Comms remains on top by a large margin while KDDI kept its No. 2 position, but is feeling pressure from PCCW and Tata Comms, which have closed the gap to just 1 percentage point.

There are now three sub-races within the top 10 ranking: ~44% between KDDI, PCCW and Tata, ~33% between Pacnet and China Telecom, and ~17% between CNCGroup, IIJNet and NTT Japan.

PCCW added LG DACOM as a customer to climb into 3rd place. Tata lost Technology Networks in Japan to drop from 3rd to 4th place.

China Telecom dropped from 4th to 6th place because it lost CNCGroup Shanghai as a customer and it became clearer that its complex connectivity relationship with China Research and Education is a peering rather than transit customer one.

This ranking has been created for Telecom Asia by Renesys Corp and is based network service providers with both a footprint in Asia and a large customer base in Asia. The idea is to target the players serving the needs of Asia-to-Asia business and excludes wholesale providers such as Level 3 which don't have a presence in Asia.

Renesys has been monitoring IP traffic for 10 years and looks 350,000 routes. The ranking is based on downstream traffic at the edge, middle and core of the network.
