TOT labor union threatens to derail 900-MHz auction

State telco TOT’s labor union has stepped up its campaign to derail the upcoming 900-MHz spectrum auction this November, claiming that not giving it the spectrum would be very damaging to national interests.

TOT labor union president Anuchit Toopleung has written to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission and the Digital Economy Commission and the Office of the Auditor General asking them to scrap the auction. More letters will soon be sent to Deputy Prime Minister Vishnu Krue-ngam and the TOT board.

TOT points out that the 900-MHz spectrum was given to them by the former Ministry of Transport and Communications without any expiry date and should be returned to them for use after the AIS concession expires this September along with the equipment and subscribers as per the concession contract.

However, the later 2010 frequency act clearly states that any expiring concession would have its spectrum returned for re-farming.

Earlier, Prime Minister General Prayuth Chanocha gave the ICT Ministry one month to sort out the issues and ordered the constitutional court to rule on whether TOT has any right to the spectrum.
