Thailand's True Corp has confirmed speculation that its mobile division True Move plans to sit out of the upcoming 1800-MHz spectrum auction.

In a statement to the Thai stock exchange, True Corp said that the management of the company is of the opinion that it should abstain from participating in the August auction.

A True Crop source told the Bangkok Post that the decision was made because the operator currently has enough spectrum across both high and low frequencies as well as the capacity to serve double its current subscriber base.

The source noted that True Move has 40% more bandwidth than market leader AIS, despite AIS having a subscriber base that is around 45% larger.

Meanwhile more auctions for 2600-MHz, 700-MHz and any remaining 1800-MHz spectrum bands will be held over the next two years, and True Move will be able to wait until then to reconsider whether it needs more airwaves.

During the August auction regulator NBTC plans to auction three 2x15MHz blocks of spectrum at a reserve price of 37.45 billion baht. The regulator plans to hold the auction on August 4, on the condition that there are at least two applicants enrolled by the June 15 deadline.
