Twitter to set up shop in Indonesia

Social media giant Twitter has confirmed that the company will soon open an office in social media-crazy Indonesia.

To be set up in Jakarta, the office will be opened some time in the next three to six months. It will be Twitter's second office in Southeast Asia and fifth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Adam Bain, Twitter’s global president of revenue and partnership, confirmed the plan via his Twitter account @adambain while in Indonesia.

“[Thank you] for welcoming us, Indonesia! I’m in Jakarta today to say that Twitter will open an office here soon,” he tweeted on Friday morning as he posted a photo of him and two Twitter executives.

With 20 million active Twitter users , Indonesia has been called a “world social media capital”. Indeed, Bain believes that there is vast potential in the country, telling the Wall Street Journal that “You see the size of the audience there and how they’re using Twitter, and it’s super-invigorating.”

It is understood that Twitter’s Jakarta office will focus on sales and business development as Twitter aims to turn its local popularity into revenue. This makes sense given that while three-quarters of Twitter’s users currently reside outside of the United States, the company still makes the majority of its revenue from the US.

Indeed, as reported previously, the growth in Asia is currently pegged at a much higher rate than in the US.
