Velocita Wireless said it will purchase SkyTel from Bell Industries for $8 million, a move intended to boost its wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions.
SkyTel is into wireless data and messaging services, including email, interactive two-way messaging, wireless telemetry services, and traditional text and numeric paging operations.
Velocita, a provider of custom wireless M2M solutions, said it will continue to provide paging and telemetry services to SkyTel's customers.
The company's Mobitex wireless data network covers more than 90 percent of US businesses and provides M2M solutions, including AVL/telematics, point-of-sale, location-based services and telemetry.
The M2M market is projected to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the telecom industry over the coming 10 years, said Mark Hull, CEO of Velocita Wireless.
"Increasing energy costs and the continuing need for enterprises to improve efficiency and productivity are combining to drive broad adoption of wireless M2M solutions," said Hull.
The acquisition is expected to close within 60 to 90 days, pending regulatory approval for the transfer of SkyTel's wireless licenses.
