Verizon Wireless is working with Google on a tablet computer, CEO Lowell McAdam has told the Wall Street Journal.

The head of the largest US mobile operator did not give away details of the collaboration but revealed it in a discussion about working with Google on bringing smartphones to market.

“We're working on tablets together, for example,” McAdam said. “We're looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience.”

Verizon Wireless last year heavily promoted the new Motorola Droid device, which is based on Google's Android OS.

Verizon Wireless would not reveal the timing or the manufacturer of a tablet. Google declined to comment.

McAdam admitted that the emerging tablet field – given an enormous boost by the release last month of the first iPad – is an area where Verizon had fallen behind rival AT&T, the carrier both for the iPad and Amazon’s Kindle e-reader.
