Vodafone Australia has opened up its 1800-MHz 4G network to prepaid customers for the first time.

Existing prepaid customers will now be able to access the operator's LTE network while within a 4G coverage area.

Vodafone Australia has announced plans to make the network available to new prepaid customers when they purchase a 4G SIM from the middle of next month. New 4G plans will be priced the same as existing 3G plans.

The 4G network currently covers metro areas of state capitals Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, and a handful of other cities.

Vodafone Australia was the last of Australia's three main mobile operators to launch LTE. The company launched services for existing customers in June, and opened up the network to new subscribers a month later.

Competition in the Australian LTE market is heating up, with incumbent Telstra planning an LTE-Advanced rollout and Optus recently launching TD-LTE to complement its existing FDD LTE network.
