Huawei has won a major five-year deal to provide equipment for Vodafone's international “Project Spring” expansion.

Under the deal the Chinese vendor will provide RAN equipment and related services for Vodafone's mobile networks in 15 countries in Europe and Africa.

The 15 countries are the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, DRC and Ghana.

Huawei will provide its SingleRAN equipment for the upgrade, to allow Vodafone to support 2G, 3G and LTE over a single network infrastructure.

Huawei's rotating CEO Eric Xu said the upgrade reflects an ongoing increase in demand for high-speed mobile networks as 4G grows in popularity worldwide.

Project Spring is Vodafone's name for the additional £7 billion ($11.72 billion) it has committed to spend by 2016 on deploying 3G and 4G infrastructure and fiber backhaul to markets in Europe and Africa.
