Windstream has joined the Linux Foundation's Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) Project.

The move demonstrates the company’s commitment to the open source and standards for SDN and NFV technologies, Windstream said in a company statement.

It also enables Windstream to leverage ONAP resources to maximize the technology standardization and adoption required in a complex, multi-vendor environment, as the company moves to virtualization and cloud-based technologies, the company added.

In addition to its new membership to ONAP, Windstream recently launched a SDN-based, on-demand optical wavelength service, called Software Defined Network Orchestrated Waves (SDNow), for data center cloud applications.

The ONAP project was formed earlier this year when the industry’s two major open networking and orchestration projects - ECOMP and the Open Orchestrator Project (or OPEN-O) - decided to merge their efforts.

China Mobile, China Telecom, AT&T, Amdocs, Bell Canada, Cisco, Ericsson, GigaSpaces, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Nokia, Orange, Tech Mahindra, VMware and ZTE are the founding members of ONAP. ARM, BOCO Inter-Telecom, Canonical, China Unicom, Cloudbase Solutions, Metaswitch and Raisecom are also involved.
