Wireless group releases LBS recommendations

The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) recommends using software to protect user privacy when using mobile location-based services.

OMTP is composed of more than 40 companies from the wireless industry. The recommendations can be found on the group's website.

According to the group, these new recommendations address privacy and accuracy of users' locations, as well as focusing on assisted GPS and its implementation on mobile devices.

The location of a user is extremely sensitive information and must be protected from possible abuse by malicious applications while enabling the best service for those same users, the group said.

The use of a software switch to protect a user's location is a simple method to give the user control over this important and sensitive data, according to the group.

"As operators and others look to launch new location-based services, these latest recommendations pull together the key hardware and software that will enable these services across mobile platforms and devices," said OMTP spokesman Tim Raby.
