Japan's OKI Electric Industry is joining Alcatel-Lucent's Open CPE program, a move that ensures Wimax interoperability between the two companies and advances the availability of compatible mobile devices.

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will help market OKI's mobile Wimax terminals. By joining the Open CPE Program, OKI, meanwhile, agrees to share market data crucial to the introduction of new features in Wimax products.

The two companies will collaborate on conducting interoperability tests to obtain Wimax Forum certification.

The partnership will focus on interoperability down to consumer devices, including CF cards to mobile terminals such as PCs, PDAs and ultra mobile PCs, data cards, and other wireless devices.

OKI expects to begin shipping Wimax compatible products within the second half of this year, coinciding with the expected commercial launch of mobile Wimax services.
