ZTE claims to have installed the world’s first broadband network that enables multiple service providers to share common infrastructure.

The so-called ‘Free seating’ network has been supplied to Wexnet, the broadband and IPTV service arm of Swedish energy firm Växjö Energi, which claims ZTE’s infrastructure enables it to provide a wide range of services to its customers.

The network automatically adjusts service routing based on traffic demand, and handles customer payments for broadband and IPTV services.

Wexnet is already using the network to supply direct services to 30,000 subscribers, and provide links to 70 other ISPs.

ZTE Sweden chief executive, Huang Zheng, says the free seating concept “will change operators’ role from pipeline operators to service shop,” while delivering benefits to carriers, ICPs and end users.
