ZTE has established a new project with the ITU aimed at developing an international standard for unidentified network threat detection and defense.

The project, established at the SG17 7 Plenary Meeting of the ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), is the ITU-T's first standard project in the field of unidentified threat detection and prevention.

ZTE said it hopes the project will become one of the core foundations for the telecommunications sectors' responses to advanced network threats and attacks, and to help establish unidentified threat protection and responses in 5G and IoT networks.

The ITU has been exploring defense and detection solutions for advanced persistent threats since mid-last year. Last month, the ITU launched an in-depth study into the applications and risks of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the field of security.

ZTE offers a range of detection and defense solutions for advanced persistent threats. The vendor may also be hoping that spearheading a network defense initiative will help it ease some of the security concerns in foreign markets associated with its status as a Chinese vendor.
