Philadelphia Flyers vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction: Don’t expect a lot of pucks

Not so long ago, Philadelphia was a strong middle of the Eastern Conference, but then, at one point, something broke. Since then, the Flyers have turned into hopeless league outsiders who are not even trying to interfere in the fight for the playoffs. It seemed that John Tortorella could wake up the Pennsylvania team, but nothing happened. Last season, the Black and Orange fell 17 points behind the Cup Final Eight, which speaks volumes about their level of play. In the offseason, Philadelphia did not make any high-profile acquisitions. Still, in the current regular season opening period, they look good: they managed to beat Columbus and Vancouver - 4:2 and 2:0, respectively, but failed to beat Ottawa - 2:5.

Edmonton is another team whose level would be below average if it weren't for two exceptions: Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. These two have been carrying the Canadian team through the playoffs for the last few years, where they've been trying to make it at least a round or two but have yet to make a real impact in the Stanley Cup race. Last season, the Oilers fell in the Western Conference semifinals, losing in six games to Vegas. In the offseason, they retained the core of their roster to make another attempt to make tangible progress. The debut of the regular season turned out badly for the Blue and Orange, and they lost twice to Vancouver - 1:8 and 3:4, but the day before, they beat Nashville - 6:1.

Philadelphia did not start the current regular championship badly, but the opponents' level during this stretch was not so solid. Now, the Flyers await a battle with Edmonton, where a star couple gradually gains momentum. On the eve of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl collected six points for two and caught the spirit, and therefore, now the Pennsylvanians will be incredibly hard to stop them. The Oilers have a much more solid ambition this season and, therefore, can not afford to lose points in a confrontation with such a modest opponent.

The confrontation between Philadelphia and Edmonton not so long ago was characterized by solid goal-scoring activity. Still, the Flyers dramatically gave up, and because of this, the rivalry between the teams became less bright and spectacular. In the three previous head-to-head meetings, the Flyers and Oilers have combined for only 11 goals (3.67 average per game), with Pennsylvanians scoring only 3 of the 11 goals. In the upcoming battle, we shouldn't expect a high-scoring game either.
