Washington had excellent regular NHL hockey last season, but things changed dramatically in the end. The Capitals suffered defeat after defeat and finished in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Washington failed to make it past the quarterfinals of the Eastern playoffs. They faced Florida and, without a convincing performance, dropped their Stanley Cup title fight with a score of 2:4.

In the preseason, Washington performed exceptionally well. They played in six games, winning four of them (Philadelphia 3:1, Detroit 2:0 and 4:2, Columbus 4:3) and losing two of them (3:4 against Buffalo and 1:2 against Columbus).

Boston fell just short of reaching the next stage of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Bears suffered an upset loss to Carolina in the Eastern quarterfinals. The series was long; no one was planning on leaving, but the Bruins lost to the Hurricanes 2:3 in the seventh game (3:4 in the series).

In the preseason, Boston didn't surprise at all. They beat the Rangers twice in six games, exchanged victories with Philadelphia, and were twice weaker than New Jersey.

Washington has a lot more sympathy for us than Boston. The Capitals played better in the preseason and will play their first game of the new NHL regular season at the Washington arena, where they won't be without their fans' support. Overall, we believe that Washington will take a two-point lead, but as a precaution, we'd recommend betting on their eventual victory.
