Tomas Martin Etcheverry

Tomas Martin Etcheverry has come a long way since losing in the first round of the qualifications last year. The Argentine is in the main draw, with the opportunity to increase his ranking even more, but with very little preparation. He didn't play a single hard court match before to this, instead electing to compete in Challengers on clay.

His sole hard-court encounter in recent months was a three-set loss to Jason Kubler at Los Cabos a few weeks ago. It demonstrated that, despite his reservations, he can play on this surface. Etcheverry possesses a powerful serve that will serve him well in New York.

The 23-year-old will undoubtedly improve his hard-court game with time, but a true test awaits in the form of Pablo Andujar. Despite not playing his best tennis, the veteran is nonetheless alive and well. It's not horrible, and it'll be a good test for the Argentine.

He's 42-25 overall this season, but only 3-3 on hard courts.

.

Pablo Andujar

Pablo Andujar is a well-known veteran who is still alive and well and playing competitive tennis. The Spaniard is 25-22 overall and 4-5 on hard courts this season. When he competes at the top level of tennis, he is often outmatched by younger and better players.

His best tennis is still on clay, which makes his participation at the US Open a challenge. He'll be susceptible on these courts, especially if his serve remains mediocre. He did play some warm-ups for this, but they were at an ITF level, which does not provide the same quality of tennis as a grand slam.

Despite playing a fairly solid tournament last year, no one expected him to do that well. He advanced to the third round, where he defeated fellow veterans Mikhail Kukushkin and Philipp Kohlschreiber before falling to Medvedev. Expect a strong performance from him, but he is unlikely to win.

Expert Betting Tips

So, this is an intriguing contest that I do not believe will be decided in three sets. I just don't see either player maintaining enough consistency to win in straight sets. Four sets are a guarantee, but I believe Etcheverry will win the match.

He's younger, so he'll play better as the match progresses, plus he has the superior serve. It matters in New York, which is why I'll support him.
