(SinoCast via NewsEdge) Chinese operator China Netcom has announced plans to set up a new company offering broadband services in China.

Observers say the setting up of the new company show "signs" of China Netcom's moved towards becoming a broadband and multi-media services provider.

While the carrier has basic broadband services, the new company will focus on other broadband-based services including IPTV, the company said.

Chine Netcom said it will partner with online company Shanda to provide online entertainment content and bundled services for the new broadband firm.

"Aside from continuing promoting the services to old and new broadband users, China Netcom and Shanda plan to set up over 200 sales outlets for customers to experience broadband entertainment products and relevant value-added services,' said Tang Jun, president of Shanda.
