Japan's NTT DoCoMo has jointed the board of the non-profit FIDO (fast identity online) Alliance as part of plans to help drive the standardization of parswordless authentication technology.

DoCoMo is today introducing passwordless authentication for a range of its online services.

As part of its collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, DoCoMo plans to team up with outside parties and third-party service providers to help drive biometric authentication standardization.

The operator has been working to integrate FIDO-enabled biometric authentication technologies to its smartphones since last year, and is now deploying mobile network services supporting biometric authentication based on compatibility with the FIDO 1.0 protocol.

According to DoCoMo four smartphones in its 2015 summer lineup, including two Galaxy S6 models, offer biometric ID capability.

The FIDO Alliance has nearly 200 members including Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Qualcomm and ARM.
