South Korean satellite pay TV provider KT Skylife has selected Ericsson for expanding its ultra high definition (UHD) service in the country.

KT SkyLife will use Ericsson HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) encoders to support the launch of its fifth UHD channel.

Ericsson encoders support video compression and pre-processing improvements in MPEG-2, AVC and HEVC, with advanced compression capabilities for video quality optimization.

Ericsson said its solution will ensure better video quality for KT SkyLife's customers, with expected picture quality improvements of up to 15-20%, while utilizing less of the pay TV operator’s bandwidth.

KT SkyLife has previously used Ericsson’s AVP 4000 system encoders and MX8400 Multiplexers, the company added.

Meanwhile, Ericsson announced it has agreed to sell its fiber cable and duct business in Wellington, New Zealand to Hexatronic Group AB for an undisclosed amount.

Hexatronic intends to operate and develop the existing fiber cable and duct business in New Zealand on a long-term basis. The company has offered to let all 19 Ericsson employees currently employed in the business to stay on.

The acquisition, announced earlier this week, takes place as a transfer of business and the new company will be named Hexatronic New Zealand Ltd. Hexatronic will take over the existing customer accounts from Ericsson.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Hexatronic. We have good experience with the company having previously sold other parts of our cable business to them,” Tomas Qvist, head of supply of Ericsson in China.

“For Ericsson, this is another step in our strategy to phase out our cable business."

He said the transaction has no significant impact on its financials, adding the company continues to grow its business in New Zealand supporting telecoms and broadcast customers.

The deal is expected to close during the third quarter of 2016, according to Ericsson.
