Ericsson and Spain's Telefonica have completed a live demonstration of LTE over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U).

The over-the-air demonstration involved using the unlicensed 5-GHz band in conjunction with licensed LTE spectrum.

It used an indoor picocell platform from Ericsson that supports 10 frequency bands and up to 300Mbps of aggregated LTE spectrum.

"This demonstration proves that multiple technologies will co-exist for best use of all spectrum and to support all deployment scenarios, widening the LTE ecosystem using the aggregation with licensed spectrum to provide the best performance experience,” Telefonica director of radio and core Angel Blazquez said.

Ericsson also announced the incorporation of enhancedments to its LTE-U network software offering to support listen before talk, improved performance and delivery and full co-existence between LTE-U and Rel-13 license-assisted access (LAA) devices on the same LAA carrier.
