PCCW has launched a new OTT video service in Hong Kong as part of efforts to leverage its strengths as a telecom operator in adjacent verticals.

Subsidiary PCCW Media's new Viu internet video platform launched in Hong Kong this week, and will be progressively rolled out across Asia and the Middle East.

The new service builds on PCCW's existing entertainment services including IPTV pay-TV service now TV and OTT music platform Moov.

PCCW said it plans to leverage its content provider network and telco relationships to help quickly build the new platform, which will operate on a freemium model.

Viu uses adapting streaming technology from Vuclip, and will host a range of premium content sourced from Korea, Japan, mainland China, and Taiwan.

“We understand that users want to keep up with the most current content with quality localization in their own language. Therefore, in meeting viewers’ needs, we are committed to offering the best localized version of the latest programs,” PCCW Media managing director Janice Lee commented.

“[Users] can watch their favourite shows anytime, anywhere and even on the go. By delivering direct to users engaging legal content, Viu OTT video service aims to set a new standard in OTT video landscape with further rollout plan in the region in the coming six months.”
