SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics say they have developed a technology capable of reducing the latency on mobile video streaming by 80% over a commercial LTE network.

The “True Real Time Mobile Streaming” technology uses the next-generation media transport standard MPEG Media Transport (MMT) to improve the live mobile streaming experience.

Legacy video streaming over mobile networks often results in up to 15 seconds of latency, the companies said. But using their new technology, this latency was reduced to 3 seconds.

SK Telecom used its Btv mobile streaming service for the demonstration.

“True Real Time Mobile Streaming Technology resolves technical challenges of providing high quality live video streaming over mobile networks without latency,” SK Telecom head of network R&D Park Jin-hyo said.

“SK Telecom will put more efforts to strengthen its mobile network service quality by developing innovative and advanced technologies.”

The companies now plan to jointly promote widespread R&D surrounding the technology with the goal of having it commercially available next year.

SK Telecom and Samsung also hope to turn the technology into a global standard by working with the 3GPP and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
