Sofant asserts smart antenna breakthrough

A European firm is demonstrating an antenna set up it claims consumes 90% less energy and could double the battery life of smartphones at the CES show in Las Vegas.

UK-based Sofant Technologies is installing its smart antenna and tunable RF technology in mobile devices for the first time at the show, in a bid to prove the set up has the ability to beat problems associated with smartphones, including short battery life, dropped calls, and poor signal quality.

Sofant chief, Sergio Tansini, claims problems arise because antenna technology has not kept pace with the rate of development of smartphones. “In reality this means that every new generation of smartphone actually performs less well than its predecessor,” Tansini claims.

The firm’s solution is a trio of core technologies comprising RF MEMS, antenna and software. Sofant claims the combination provides an antenna that locks onto the best signal available, which improves data transfer rates and could cut network congestion. It also claims the set up consumes 90% less energy than current antennae, with a knock-on benefit of potentially doubling the batter life of smartphones.

“Antennae account for 50% of power consumption when a device is on standby and even more during calls,” Tansini notes, adding. “Because antenna technology has barely moved in recent years, the antenna continues to act a bottleneck to data transfer.”
