Telefonica has developed a web-based machine-to-machine (M2M) platform it claims will offer the high level of visibility and control required as the list of ‘connected’ equipment grows.

Named Smart M2M, the platform offers real time monitoring of traffic type, volume and current consumption, maps of connected devices, diagnostics, and localization. The telco’s Telefonica Digital division is marketing the platform, which will be sold on a country by country basis by leveraging Telefonica’s global operations.

“By matching our technical expertise and experience in M2M with our local knowledge, we have been able to develop a simple and flexible platform that can give our customers a complete and precise view of their business processes,” explains Carlos Morales, Director of M2M & Cloud at Telefónica Digital.

Another benefit claimed by the telco is that it will have greater control over the development of the platform. “The visibility and management of machine-to-machine communications is a vital component of any successful deployment,” Morales says.

Smart M2M is up and running in Spain and Brazil, and Telefonica plans to launch in Chile, Argentina and the Czech Republic before expanding to its other territories.
