AliCloud has opened its second data center in Hong Kong to help meet growing demand for cloud services from the market and the wider APAC region.

Alibaba's cloud computing arm announced the establishment of a new Tier 3 data center, designed to provide high-level security and 99.99% availability.

Intended as a new availability zone for Hong Kong, customers can use the facility for high availability and disaster recovery, as well as for advanced cloud and big data services. The local partner that supports the data center facility is PCCW Global, the international operating divions of HKT.

AliCloud noted that the company has a similar arrangement with its first Hong Kong facility partner Towngas Telecom.

Local organizations already making use of AliCloud's services in the market include LinkByNet, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and LongTu Game.

The Hong Kong AliCloud cloud server nodes currently support elastic compute, relational database, object storage and other services, including server load balancing and cloud monitoring. AliCloud is also working on adding support for proprietary virtual private cloud services.

"A new availability zone in Hong Kong to meet the urgent need for cloud computing resources in the Asia Pacific region is a strategic move for AliCloud,” commented the company's vice president Sicheng Yu.

“The need for a truly global cloud computing platform is still on the upswing as can be seen from AliCloud’s overseas business volumes, which have increased more than four times compared to last year.”

AliCloud opened its first Hong Kong data center in May last year.
