Japan's NTT DoCoMo and Ericsson have completed what they assert is the first commercial launch of a multi-vendor NFV system.

DoCoMo has deployed the system, which is based on Ericsson's open NFV platform, as part of a project to provide better services for customers.

The platform is built on OpenStack-based open architecture, and initially supports a multi-vendor virtual evolved packet core environment.

Ericsson provided a cloud execution environment as the virtualization platform and its cloud manager system as the NFV orchestrator. The vendor also provided system integration and support services for the deployment.

“DoCoMo has again demonstrated its technology leadership by the launch of multi-vendor NFV,” the operator's CTO Seizo Onoe commented.

“I am extremely excited to see this progress to provide better services based on standardized future-proof architecture.”

DoCoMo and Ericsson are collaborating on sandardization and interoperability work for the NFV ecosystem, including OPNFV, ETSI NFV and the 3GPP.
