HTC, Nokia settle patent disputes

HTC and Nokia have become the latest smartphone ecosystem players to reach a truce in their patent battles, announcing a cross-licensing and technology collaboration agreement.

HTC will pay Nokia royalties to end their disputes, the companies announced, but did not disclose specific figures.

Each company will gain access to the other's patent portfolio, and will also explore “future technology collaboration opportunities.”

The settlement came just days before the US ITC was scheduled to announce whether it was ordering an import ban on HTC devices as requested during proceedings filed by Nokia.

For Nokia, the settlement marks a good early step towards monetizing its IP assets amid the sale of its devices business to Microsoft.

The agreement comes weeks after Samsung agreed to pay Ericsson hundreds of millions in royalties in a settlement of the two companies' legal disuptes.
