IBM looks set to lay off 5,000 employees, or more than 4% of its US workforce, mostly in its global services business.

Reports in the The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Bloomberg and other news outlets said the cuts would take place this week.

Most of the jobs will be transferred to India, the reports said.

IBM has already cut at least 4,000 jobs since January, and 2,000 in 2007, Bloomberg said.

IBM has around 115,000 US employees, and nearly 400,000 worldwide. It already employs around 113,000 in the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China.

IBM has repeatedly declined to comment on the reports. IBM shares on the NYSE fell 0.36% yesterday, and a further 0.13% in after hours trading, to $97.82.
