India's government plans to implement systems to allow law enforcement agencies to track mobile communications including text messages and mobile data use in real-time.
The Department of Telecom has formulated a draft telecom security policy that addresses concerns from elsewhere in the government that there are no provisions for law enforcement agencies to intercept communications, the Economic Timessaid.
The draft specifies that the department would put in place effective systems and regulations to ensure that telecom users can be traced in terms of their identity, permanent address and current location.
The draft proposes the establishment of a centralised system for interception and monitoring, a security certification center for testing network equipment and a cyber security emergency response team.
India's mobile operators will be expected to implement security controls under instruction from the government, and to share the costs of implementation.
They would be required to share information on network attacks and intrusions with government security agencies.
