AdMob has announced that India's mobile web traffic has grown to the extent that the mobile advertising company received 1.2 billion hits from the nation in March.

The company, which commenced Indian operations in June, said traffic from India had grown over 100% over the 10 months the operations have been live.

And India now generates the second most mobile web traffic globally on the AdMob platform, only beaten by the US.

“Mobile ownership and usage far outstrips ownership of PCs with Internet access in India,” AdMob country manager for India Mahesh Narayanan said. “In the near future Mobile internet usage is going to overtake fixed line internet usage [in the nation].”

The Indian business has also seen strong support from advertisers, already signing up Nokia, Vodafone, ICICI Bank, Travelocity, Toyota and Warner Bros Pictures.

The US-based AdMob has been operating since 2006. Google agreed to acquire the company late last year for $750 million, but US antitrust regulator FTC has hinted that it may block the deal.
