Nokia Networks has launched what it is billing as the world's first commercial carrier-grade NFV solution for mobile broadband networks.

The company has debuted a commercial telco cloud system compliant with ETSI NFV architecture for VoLTE services. The first network implementation is expected to go live by the end of the year.

Nokia also unveiled Cloud Network Director, a tool to allow operators to automatically deploy, configure, optimize and repair virtualized network functions during the deployment of VoLTE and other services.

“The commercial implementation of NFV capabilities is a major step forward in the development of the telco cloud which many operators are eyeing up as a way to make more efficient use of network capacity and gain greater agility in service provisioning,” IDC research manager Sathya Atreyam said.

It has been a busy week for Nokia Networks. The company announced on Wednesday that it had completed a demonstration of FDD/TDD carrier aggregation over a commercial chipset in collaboration with China Telecom.

The same day, the company launched a product offering allowing Wimax operators to directly upgrade to LTE-Advanced.
