SingTel will this week launch direct carrier billing for Google Play purchases in Singapore.

The operator will debut the payment option for both postpaid and prepaid mobile customers on Thursday.

Android users in Singapore can sign up for carrier billing with a one-time registration and verification.

SingTel revealed it also plans to progressively roll out carrier billing to its wholly-owned subsidiary Optus in Australia, and to its regional mobile associates. These associates include operators in Thailand, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

The debut will mark the first time carrier billing for Google Play is available in an ASEAN nation.

In APAC, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus in Korea and DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank in Japan all offer the option. It is also available through 3 in Hong Kong and Telstra in Australia.

SingTel's debut will come days after Dtac and Nokia introduced the Nokia 625 Windows Phone in Thailand, and with it direct carrier billing for Windows Phone Marketplace.
