Vivek Sood appointed chief executive of Grameenphone

Vivek Sood is succeeding Tore Johnsen as chief executive of Bangladesh-based mobile operator Grameenphone.

Sood is currently the chief financial officer and an executive vice president of the Indian mobile operator Uninor. He will take up his position from January 7, said Telenor, which owns majority sharing in both companies.

As part of a planned operational move when reaching his retirement age (65), Grameenphone’s current chief will take on the role of senior vice president at the Telenor Group region Asia office in Bangkok.

Johnsen has served as chief executive of Grameenphone since March 2011, and has vast and extensive experience from heading mobile operations in four different Asian markets – Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

GSMA elects new board members

The GSMA has elected new members to its board for the two-year period from January 2013 through December 2014. The industry association has also reelected Franco Bernabè, chairman and chief executive of Telecom Italia Group, as its chairman, and Jon Fredrik Baksaas, president and chief of Telenor Group as its deputy chairman, for a second term in these roles.

Akamai appoints new chief

Akamai Technologies has appointed company co-founder and chief scientist, Tom Leighton as chief executive, effective January 1, 2013.

Leighton succeeds Paul Sagan who announced earlier this year that he intended to step down as chief executive by the end of 2013.

Sagan will become a senior advisor to the company, working with Leighton on business strategy and to ensure a smooth management transition. Both Leighton and Sagan will remain Akamai directors.

Separately, Akamai has appointed Robert Hughes as president of worldwide operations, and Rick McConnell president of products and development. Both are currently Akamai executive vice presidents and will take up their new roles on January 1.
