The project of the European Super League meant the creation of a tournament for the best clubs in Europe. The creation of the Super League was announced in April 2021, but after criticism from FIFA and UEFA, nine of the 12 founding clubs withdrew from the project. In early 2022, it was reported that Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were preparing to launch a Super League with 60-80 clubs.
