The seventh game day of the first international LoL tournament kicks off on Friday, May 20. The second game of the Rumble stage of the Mid-Season Invitational 2022 will pit the Chinese Royal Never Give Up against the Americans Evil Geniuses.

The Mid-Season Invitational 2022 is a LAN tournament in the cybersports discipline of League of Legends, featuring the winners of the spring splits of 11 separate Riot leagues, with LCL not sending a representative this spring due to the cancellation of the LCL Spring Split. It was also announced on April 21 that the LPL representative would compete online from China due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and all teams will compete at 35ms to level the playing field. The tournament prize money is $250,000.

Evil Geniuses: You'll have to do better to get ahead

Evil Geniuses formed a League of Legends lineup in 2013. The organization played 2 splits in the EU LCS before it moved to North America in 2014. Due to North America's problems, Evil Genes announced their departure from League of Legends and sold their place in the league to Winterfox. EG returned to the NA LCS in 2019 with the acquisition of the Echo Fox franchise slot, bringing the brand back after a 5-year break. They became LCS champions for the first time in the spring LCS 2022 season.

Building on their potential in the summer of 2021, Evil Geniuses took a mid from Jojopyun Academy to replace Jiizuke, and Vulcan was acquired from Cloud9 to replace Svenskeren. An inspired Pole, who previously played for Rogue in Europe, has joined the team. With only two members of the Summer 2021 squad remaining, Evil Geniuses attracted attention at the Lock-In 2022 tournament, going undefeated in their group and beating Golden Guardians and Cloud9 in the playoffs. Evil Geniuses faced Team Liquid in the final, who beat them 3-0.

Evil Geniuses were now considered one of the best teams in the league, but after 3 weeks, they found themselves in 8th place. In the second half of the split, the team performed much better, finishing in 4th place with a 9-9 result and securing a place in the top playoff net. Evil Geniuses lost to Team Liquid in a 5-game series by a narrow margin, leaving EG relegated to the losers' bracket. They beat FlyQuest 3-1, Cloud9 3-0, Team Liquid 3-0, and eventually 100 Thieves 3-0 in the grand final to become the 5th team ever to win the LCS championship. They also won a slot at MSI 2022.

The Mid-Season Invitational itself started with good news for Evil Geniuses. They only had three teams in the groups, so their chances of making it to the next stage were great. EG had only 4 wins out of eight matches, which they got against ORDER (ORDER finished the group stage 0-8, losing 4 times each to EG and G2). In the Rumble stage, the American team will find it difficult, as so far, we have seen easy wins, against a weak region and tough battles, against strong regions. This encounter against Royal Never Give Up will be a real test for Evil Geniuses, which they are not sure to pass.

Royal Never Give Up: A confident 9-0 in the group

Royal Never Give Up was formed in 2015 with the acquisition of Vici Potential Gaming. They formed a lineup of over 5 players: LetMe, GodLike, Skye, Mlxg, Xiaohu, Wuxx, and LeY. In their LPL 2015 Summer Season debut, they didn't put up much of a fight, finishing in 9th-12th place. Despite this, the team received an invitation to the IEM World Championship. Participation at this tournament showed the team's promise as they prepared for the 2016 Spring Season, where they managed to win the title with a 3-1 win over EDward Gaming in the final. At MSI 2016, Royal Never Give Up finished 3-4th after losing to Korea's SK Telecom T1. The same squad came together to finish 2nd in the 2016 summer season, securing them a place at Worlds, where they finished 5-8 after again losing 1-3 against SK Telecom T1.

In 2017, the team failed to win either the spring or summer season. Despite this, the team made it to Worlds 2017, where they placed 3-4 after losing to SK Telecom T1. In 2018, the RNG squad managed to win four consecutive tournaments: LPL Spring 2018, MSI 2018, Demacia Cup 2018 Summer, and LPL 2018 Summer. The team was considered one of the tournament favorites to win Worlds 2018, but Royal Never Give Up lost in the quarterfinals, losing 2-3 to G2 Esports.

The team had a relatively disappointing 2019, when they managed to qualify for Worlds 2019 but failed to make it through the group stage. In 2020, Royal Never Give Up placed 5-8 at best at the NEST 2020 event. A poor summer season eventually resulted in them missing out on Worlds for the first time in 3 years. Royal Never Give Up won the LPL 2021 spring season, securing their ticket to MSI 2021, where they won their first international title since 2018. Royal Never Give Up later qualified for Worlds 2021 after beating Team WE 3-0 in the LPL Regional 2021. After Royal Never Give Up topped their group ahead of Hanwha Life Esports, they were eliminated by EDward Gaming in the quarterfinals in a five-game series, leading to a 5-8 exit.

In 2022, Royal Never Give Up finished in first place in the LPL 2022 spring season, leading them to the MSI 2022. At the Mid-Season Invitational itself, the Chinese are doing just fine. Three easy wins in the group give Royal Never Give Up a huge chance of getting out of the group. Before the start of the game day, when Royal Never Give Up should have played 3 games in a row to advance from the group by a score of 6-0, the unpleasant news was revealed. The previous three matches would be replayed. After the news, the Chinese team was even thinking of withdrawing from the tournament. However, they played these matches again and came out 6-0 from the group. The first meeting will be against Evil Geniuses, who the Chinese should have no problem passing them.
