VFL Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction: Borussia Dortmund to continue winning

On Saturday 17th February 2024, Borussia Dortmund who have rediscovered their form in the league, will go to the Volkswagen Arena to take on a Wolfsburg team that isn't playing up to par.

Edin Terzic's team has had a very strong start to 2024, placing them in the top four. Last weekend, they increased their lead over RB Leipzig, who are currently in fifth position.

Borussia Dortmund has performed admirably so far this season and is presently fourth in the Bundesliga rankings. The away team hopes to duplicate their 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg from last week when they easily defeated them.

Conversely, VfL Wolfsburg has not been at their best this season and now sits in 12th position in the league rankings. In their last game, the hosts were defeated 1-0 by Union Berlin, and they will need to recover this weekend.

Wolfsburg have dropped to 12th place since they haven't been able to secure a victory in 2024. They began the year with three consecutive 1-1 draws, then had to fight back twice to draw with Hoffenheim in another tie. Due to this outcome, Wolfsburg has now lost six straight games for the first time under Kovac's leadership. Should they continue this streak to seven games, it will be their worst start to a calendar year since 1998.

Although Wolfsburg is still seven points above the drop zone and seems to be losing ground on Eintracht Frankfurt, its chances of qualifying for Europe seem to be dwindling despite that slip. Though this is the lowest point total the team has had since 2016–17, when they had a relegation playoff to avoid the drop, the team will still be closely watched.

Dortmund has put a lacklustre first half of the season behind them with four victories from five Bundesliga games, taking them three points clear of the Champions League spots. Except for a setback against a challenging Heidenheim team, BVB has scored three goals or more in each of their four wins thus far in 2024, demonstrating that their offensive has been the key to their success.

Last Saturday, Dortmund easily defeated their fellow European challengers Freiburg 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park, bouncing back from the 0-0 stalemate away from home. Leipzig was able to close the three-point deficit with Die Roten Bullen after their draw with Augsburg; however, Dortmund is finding it difficult to close the gap with Stuttgart, who are now in third place.

Dortmund has a chance to tie a 30-year club record in this game as well, considering it may be the first time they have kept four straight clean sheets away from home in the Bundesliga since 1994. That would be ideal training before traveling to the Netherlands midweek to play PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

Dortmund has been outstanding in 2024, and with Terzic nearly at full strength, they have the potential to inflict further suffering on Wolfsburg in this match. Kovac could scarcely have asked for much tougher tests to end Wolfsburg's losing streak against Dortmund, which is already six games deep. 

Additionally, Wolfsburg's appalling record versus Dortmund makes their chances of winning even less. Dortmund has had convincing victories against Wolfsburg for over a decade as well; in their 17 prior games, Dortmund has won 15 of them and scored 46 goals.
