Viktoria Kuzmova vs Shelby Rogers Prediction: Can Rogers get another straight sets win?

Slovakian former world number 43, Viktoria Kuzmova meets 31st seed Rogers Shelby in the second round of the US Open. In their last meeting at the Billie Jean King cup last November, Kuzmova defeated Rogers in straight sets. Rogers though has had a better 2022. She ended up reaching the third final and first at a WTA 500 event in her career after defeating Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets at the Silicon Valley Classic.

Kuzmova upset Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets: 6-3, 6-4 to make it into the second round of the US Open. She won 71% of points on her first serve and 5/12 break points, The qualifier steamrolled into the main draw without dropping a set in three matches. Kuzmova played in the qualifiers because the former world number 43 saw her rankings plummet to outside the top 100. Though she grew up on clay, her best surface is the hard court and this came into play in her first round match.

31st seed Shelby Rogers clocked 73% on her first serve to negotiate a two sets to one win over Arantxa Rus in the first round of the US Open. Rogers lost the first set but rallied to win the next two and book her process into the second round. The American’s preparation for the US Open went smoothly as she got to the final of the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose where she lost to Daria Kasatkina.

The pair met in November 2021 where Kuzmova won in straight sets for the only meeting between them. The Slovakian won 6-4, 6-4 at the Billie Jean King cup.

Rogers is having a great season making it to the top 30 in the single rankings a few weeks ago. Her form is reflected in the odds for this tie wherein the oddsmakers have placed her as an overwhelming favorite even though she lost to her opponent in the Billie Jean King Cup last year. Facing off against Kuzmova isn’t going to be simple as the Slovakian seems to be making efforts to climb back up the rankings. However, Kuzmova has not progressed beyond the first round at New York until this year and is certainly looking to re-enact her 2019 form. Her recent run in the qualifying rounds is a testament that she is going to put up a fight. In spite of all that the 31st seed will progress as she is the form player currently and will be motivated to avenge her loss to Kuzmova last November.
