Thai mobile operator AIS has unveiled a three-year transformation plan aimed at evolving into what it calls a “digital life service provider.”

As part of the program, the operator will invest 4 billion baht towards rolling out a fixed broadband network starting next year, the Bangkok Postsaid.

The company will also upgrade its software systems to allow it to offer next-generation digital applications and accommodate surging mobile data traffic.

The digital transformation process is expected to be complete in 2017.

Announcing the plans, AIS EVP for marketing Pratthana Leelapanang said competitive pressures and technological advancements have made it essential for mobile operators to transform into internet-based service firms.

He also urged regulators to proceed with plans for a 4G auction so the operator will be able to better meet its customers' demands and address the issue of data traffic congestion.

AIS has around 43.8 million mobile customers, and around 38.7 million of these are subscribed to the operator's 3G network. But the operator's consession with TOT is due to expire next year, which will leave it with the smallest portion of wireless spectrum among its rivals.
