Nokia has been saved from prolonged industrial action at its Tamil Nadu plant, after the state government intervened in a wage dispute between the handset giant and factory workers.

Workers at the Sriperumbudur factory went on strike yesterday, demanding better wage terms and the reinstatement of workers who had their employment suspended by Nokia, Business Standardsaid.

A total of 63 workers had been suspended in January on “disciplinary grounds,” after earlier industrial action at the plant.

But after a meeting called by the Tamil Nadu government's minister of labor, and attended by representatives of company management and employee union NIEPU, the strike has been called off.

Nokia told the Standard it had reached a long-term wage settlement with the union, and offered to revoke the contested employee suspensions.

The Sriperumbudur plant is one of Nokia's largest in India, judging by export value.
