SK Telecom has commercialized a real-time mobile streaming technology dubbed “T Live Streaming,” which reduces latency from 15 seconds to three seconds.

The technology had been applied to SPOTV, a live sports streaming channel on SK Broadband’s mobile media platform ‘oksusu.’

The company developed T Live Streaming by customizing MPEG Media Transport (MMT), a standard developed by the Moving Picture Expert Group to the mobile network environment.

SK Telecom said that the technology will be applied to other oksusu channels to allow more users to experience true real-time streaming services.

In addition, the technology can also be applied to Multi-Channel Networks’ platforms (like individual broadcasting, game broadcasting, etc.) that value real-time feedback from viewers to not only reduce latency in live broadcasting, but also to increase interactivity with viewers.

SK Telecom has been serving as the chair of the MMT Sub Working Group since February 2015, and is working closely with deputy chairs including Samsung Electronics to promote the standardization of the T Live Streaming technology.

Upon standardization by the end of 2017, the technology will serve a crucial role as the next-generation mobile protocol, replacing MPEG-2 Transport Streaming and Http Live Streaming, which were used as media transmission standard technologies over the past two decades.
